Officials serving in taluks should prepare their own comprehensive natural disaster management plan based on the experiences they had gained over the years so that it would come in handy during emergency, Collector M. Karunakaran said.

Inaugurating a one-day regional workshop on preparing taluk-level natural disaster management plan here on Wednesday, Dr. Karunakaran said the natural disasters such as torrential rain, flood, earthquake, drought and tsunami having devastating effect and capable of wiping out the people’s livelihood might differ from one another.

Though the officials could not avert natural disasters altogether, they could mitigate the gravity of the disaster by putting the official machinery on high alert during emergency and keeping ready an executable action plan, which would save thousands of lives.

With the experience they had gained over the years from each region where they had served, the officials could prepare their own natural disaster management plan which should be executable without any hassle at the time of emergency.

“If you are working in a coastal district, you should anticipate more problems from the sea like high tide, erosion, tsunami, etc. Since you might have gained a lot of experience from these natural calamities over the years, you can prepare the taluk-level natural disaster management plan and upgrade it periodically depending upon the latest technological developments,” Dr. Karunakaran suggested.

Officials in the rank of tahsildar from Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram participated in workshop conducted by officials from Chennai.
