“Politics needs people with courage of conviction”

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said that; “In today's world of liberalisation and globalisation, we need people with courage of conviction and commitment to a cause to enter the political arena in order to take forward the development agenda without undermining our culture and heritage.”

Addressing the Members of the Legislative Assembly here on Saturday to felicitate Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam and Deputy Speaker A.V. Sreedharan for completing 25 years as members of the house, she said the “territory presents a classic example of our ability to harmonise modernity with tradition, thanks to the wisdom of its leaders and the maturity of its people.”

Complimenting Mr. Vaithilingam and Mr. Sreedharan Ms. Kumar said the achievement of both the leaders was something commendable. “In this era of competitive politics, 25 years of uninterrupted record as Legislators is laudable and to remain at the helm of affairs when this achievement is being celebrated is even more commendable,” she said.

Earlier, she was received by Speaker R. Radhakrishnan at the Assembly. Besides Members of the Legislative Assembly, Union Minister of State for Planning, Parliamentary Affairs and Culture V. Narayanasamy, Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council A. Chakrapani, Rajya Sabha member P. Kannan and former Chief Ministers of UT attended the felicitation function.
