More than 600 employees of a mobile phone spare parts manufacturing company near Sriperumpudur were arrested based on a complaint from company authorities on Friday. They were later released on own bail.

According to the police, a section of the employees were demanding that the company authorities recognise the trade union wing of a national-level political party and enter into a fresh wage agreement with it. They refused to accept the wage agreement entered into by the company with the trade union wing of a State-level political party.

The employees resorted to a sit-in on the company premises on September 21 to press their demand and later withdrew the same after negotiations.

Subsequently, the company authorities directed the employees to turn up for duty on Saturday for compensating the hold-up in production on September 21. Irked by this, employees decided to resort to a sit-in again. The company authorities preferred a complaint with the Sunguvarchatram police.
