Eldest son of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi M.K. Muthu was admitted to a private hospital in Puducherry on Saturday morning. He is currently on ventilator, but is responding well to treatment, doctors say.

Mr. Muthu was admitted to A.G. Padmavathy hospital. The Managing Director and Cardiologist of the hospital Dr. G. Elangovan said Mr. Muthu had suffered from a cardio-respiratory arrest when he was brought in. He is now on a ventilator but is responding well to treatment.

His blood pressure is stable and his heart is functioning, but because of "hypoxic damage to the brain" it will take some time for recovery, he said.

According to former education minister S.P. Sivakumar, Mr. Muthu was travelling from Thiruvarur to Chennai to undergo treatment for "respiratory problems". On the way, he experienced some discomfort and was admitted to the hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
