A 12-year-old girl was rescued from domestic labour from a house in Anna Nagar by Childline volunteers following a distress call from one of the neighbours.

The girl was reportedly made to work all days with low pay, no rest and inadequate food. “She looked famished and scared when she was brought to us,” said an official from Child Welfare Committee.

The 12-year-old native of Tiruchi was brought to the city by the couple, both of whom are working professionals, a few years ago. According to officials, she was working as a full-time maid in their house and also looking after their toddler.

Officials said the girl had several burns inflicted by her employers. The girl has been lodged in a private childcare home and a complaint lodged against the couple at W7 police station in Anna Nagar.

“We are looking for her parents to find out if she was brought on the pretext of education or safety,” an investigating officer said.
