A 45-year-old man from Ariyalur district, whose leg was cut by a roommate at Malappuram in Kerala on Saturday evening, underwent a surgery at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday, allegedly after being denied treatment by two medical college hospitals in Kerala.

The victim, Rajendran K. of Kargudi in Ariyalur, was brought to the CMCH on Sunday. Earlier, he was admitted to Kuttipuram Government Hospital and Government Medical Colleges in Thrissur and Kozhikode in Kerala.

CMCH authorities said Rajendran underwent a microvascular surgery to correct the veins and rearrange the severed portion.

Rajendran’s wife Kalpana alleged that medical college hospitals in Thrissur and Kozhikode denied him treatment.

“Doctors are assessing the condition of the leg,” said R. Soundravel, Resident Medical Officer, CMCH.

Around 9 p.m. on Saturday Rajendran, who had gone to Malappuram in search of work as a manual labourer, was attacked by Kodeeswaran in a rented house. Kodeeswaran fled after the incident.

Nipun Sankar K., Station House Officer of Kuttipuram police station, whose team was in Coimbatore in connection with investigation, told The Hindu that six workers, including Rajendran and Kodeeswaran, were living in the room. They drank together on Saturday and the attack occurred when Rajendran was asleep.

Mr. Sankar said Debesh Kumar Behera, Superintendent of Police, Malappuram, directed him to submit a detailed report. Rajendran was taken to Thrissur after being administered first aid at Kuttipuram GH. He was sent to Kozhikode reportedly after Thrissur Medical College Hospital did not have the facility to perform microvascular surgery.

The superintendent of Thrissur MCH said Rajendran was not denied treatment by the hospital. The patient needed vascular surgery.

Since there was no facility for the surgery at the Thrissur hospital, he was referred to Kozhikode MCH, the Superintendent said.
