The mortal remains of the 69th pontiff of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham (mutt), Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, were placed in a ‘samadhi’ on the mutt premises in Kancheepuram on Thursday morning.
The seer's ‘brindavanam’, or final resting place, was constructed right next to the one that serves as the brindavanam of the 68th pontiff Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi.
Sri Jayendra Saraswathi suddenly suffered from breathing problems and was rushed to a private hospital in Kancheepuram, where he passed away on February 28.
Early morning on Thursday, mutt officials stopped the public darshan and initiated the installation of the brindavanam by reciting slokas.
State Governor Bhanwarilal Purohit, Union Ministers Pon. Radhakrishnan and Sadananada Gowda, were present during the rituals.
A huge crowd assembled in the small auditorium to watch the proceedings of the installation of the brindavanam.
The mutt’s current pontiff Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi performed the poojas for his guru and predecessor.
