Gloom and grief pervaded Irulneeki village in Tiruvarur district on Wednesday after news that its most prominent son of the soil Sri Jayendra Saraswathi of Kanchipuram Mutt had died in Kanchipuram.
“Swamiji had contributed to the development of the village where he was born in both social and spiritual spheres,” says S. Ramachandran, a local resident. He also recalls that the seer through the Chandrasekara Rural Development Trust, had helped livelihood development activities such as tailoring classes for women. “Self-help group members are now benefitting well from that. The trust runs the Sankara Mutt Veda Patasala where vidyarthis pursue Rig Veda studies,” he observes.
Besides, he has helped establish a clinic, built overhead water tank, construct school buildings and had taken particular interest in its development, says seer’s friend and noted farmers’ leader P.R. Pandian.
“I’m proud that we belong to the place where Swamiji was born,” he says recalling Sri Jayendra’s social and spiritual contributions.
Ever year coinciding with Sri Jayendra’'s birthday, a vidwat sadas and Rig Samhita Homan would be conducted at Irulneeki village when vedic scholars and public personalities would participate in the proceedings.
