Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader M.V. Jayarajan will surrender before the High Court Registrar on February 2 as per an order of the Supreme Court, which upheld his conviction in a contempt of court case.
Mr. Jayarajan had been found guilty of contempt of court for calling High Court judges derogatory Malayalam word ‘shumbhan’ at a roadside meeting here in June 2010 to protest against the High Court’s ban on roadside meetings.
Though the High Court had sentenced him to a six-month jail term, the apex court reduced the sentence to four weeks.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the CPI(M) district conference at Koothuparamba here on Saturday, Mr. Jayarajan said he would appear before the High Court Registrar on February 2.
He said as he had earlier spent nine days in the Poojappura Central Jail after his conviction in the case by the High Court, he is expected to undergo imprisonment for the remaining days in the same prison.
Mr. Jayarajan, CPI(M) State committee member and former MLA, had already said that he accepted the apex court’s verdict.
The Supreme Court passed its verdict on Mr. Jayarajan’s appeal against his conviction by the High Court.
The apex court held that Mr. Jayarajan’s speech was meant to scandalise and lower the dignity of the court.
