Institute director held for wall collapse

The Sunguvarchatram police have arrested director, Jeppiaar Institute of Technology, Kunnam, Mariyawilson, and three others in connection with the death of 10 workers from other States on the educational institution premises on August 6.

According to police, a group of workers from Odisha and Assam were deployed for a construction of multi-purpose sports auditorium on the institute premises.

The workers were engaged by Rajkumar and Arul Jaya Abrose, civil contractors, and Sudhanandhan (alias) Sadharsan, who had supplied manpower for the construction work.

While preliminary investigations revealed that the workers engaged for the project did not have any experience in such works, investigation revealed that the institute management had not obtained proper permission from the authorities concerned for taking up the Rs.2-crore project.

Also, materials used for the work were found to be of inferior quality and adequate time was not given for curing of the wall, police said.

A case under sections 338 and 304 (ii) of IPC was booked against them.
