The Madras High Court on Tuesday quashed orders passed by Commissioner of Police, Chennai City, on May 29 detaining Thirumurugan Gandhi, the leader of May 17 Movement, and three others under the Goondas Act.

Justices A. Selvam and P. Kalaiyarasan quashed the detention orders after concurring with Senior Counsel N.R. Elango, representing the detainees, that the petitioners had not indulged in any activity detrimental to public order thereby warranting their preventive detention under the Goondas Act.

Mr. Gandhi and Tamilar Vidiyal Katchi functionaries Tyson, Jegan alias Ilamaran, and Arunkumar were arrested along with a few others when they attempted to stage a protest at the Marina beach in memory of Tamils who were killed in the conflict between Sri Lankan government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

They were lodged at the Puzhal Central Prison before the Goondas Act was invoked against them.
