The Neyveli Lignite Corporation, a Navratna company, has bagged the “Greentech CSR Award—2014” instituted by the Greentech Foundation, New Delhi.

The award has been given to the NLC in recognition of its commitment to social cause, gender inclusion, augmentation of water resources and skill development activities involving people in the peripheral areas, and various measures taken to protect environment.

The award was presented by Asok Mohan Chakrabarti, former Chief Secretary to the Kolkata government, to NLC Chairman-cum-Managing Director B.Surender Mohan at the 15th Environment and CSR conference-2015 held in Kolkata on January 29.

Mr. Mohan said that every year the company had been increasing the budgetary allocation for its CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities. For instance, in the past three years it had earmarked funds to the tune of Rs 14.26 crore, Rs 26.81 crore and Rs 41.42 crore respectively.

A major chunk of the CSR budget — 50 per cent — was being allocated for women empowerment and women-related activities. It had set aside a sum of Rs. 14 crore for desilting the Walajah lake to augment its storage level so as to benefit 11,500 acres of land in the ayacut area.

The NLC would join hands with the Centre in the implementation of Swacch Bharat programme and in this endeavour it had undertaken to build a total number of 2,500 toilets in government schools spread across 27 districts in Tamil Nadu and two districts in Rajasthan.

The NLC had also been providing healthcare services, training in various skills and vocational avenues to the people in the surrounding villages, the Chairman said.
