The Tirupur Superintendent of Police was among the five police officials who appeared before the Madras High Court on Monday in contempt proceedings initiated in connection with the recent arrest of a judicial magistrate.
The First Bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice R.K. Agrawal and Justice M. Sathyanarayanan, had issued notices to them to appear personally before the Bench to explain their stand.
Magistrate S. Thangaraj of the Fast Track Court, Coonoor, was arrested based on a complaint by Uma Maheswari, a Sub-Inspector.
He was later released on bail.
As per the order, the Superintendent of Police, Tirupur, Ponni, two Deputy Superintendents of Police Suresh Kumar and C. Pitchai, an Inspector, K. Santhamurthy, and a Sub-Inspector, Krishnakumar, appeared before the court.
Counsel for the police officials said time might be granted to enable them to file their counter and also prayed for the dispensation of the personal appearance of the officials for the present. Hence, the court posted the matter for further hearing after two weeks.
The personal appearance of the contemnors was being dispensed with for the present, it said.
