A 22-year-old Finnish woman was found dead at a lodge in Triplicane on Wednesday. It is suspected that she died of drug overdose.

Nea Emilia, 22, came to India with her friend Aleksy Joel Santeri on a tourist visa on November 23, 2017. They had toured across the country and reached Kanniyakumari on Monday. From there, they reached Chennai on Tuesday and checked in at Himalaya Hotel on Triplicane High Road.

The hotel staff said they were drunk when they arrived on Tuesday. According to the police, the two consumed liquor and drugs at the hotel.

On Wednesday morning, Santeri rushed out and sought help from the public as Emilia was unconscious. He then went to the reception and sought medical assistance.

The police and emergency service personnel were alerted, who reached and found Emilia dead.

Santeri was unable to describe what happened in the hotel room as he was in a state of panic and under the influence of drugs, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Triplicane, Pravesh Kumar visited the spot and conducted a preliminary inquiry.

Emilia’s body was taken to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for post-mortem. Santeri has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. His condition was stable, doctors treating him said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Arokia Prakasam said, “We have informed officials of the Finnish embassy about the death.”

The police registered a case of unnatural death. “Only after the post-mortem can we come to a conclusion on the cause of death,” Mr. Prakasam said.
