Filing of nominations concludes, 1,879 more candidates in fray

The submission of nominations for the Assembly elections concluded on Saturday with 1,879 more candidates filing their papers.

The total number of nominations filed was 4,280. Of the districts, Chennai accounted for the maximum number of nominations - 387.

On Saturday, Chennai received 191 nominations.

Totally, 152 nominations were filed in the Tirupur (North) constituency, according to an official release.

The process of filing submissions commenced on March 19.

The papers would be scrutinised on Monday. Wednesday (March 30) would be the last date for the withdrawal of papers.

Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa were among those who filed the nomination papers.

Both would be contesting from the central region of the State – Tiruvarur and Srirangam respectively.

Sitting DMK MLA of Vedaranyam S.K.Vedarathinam filed his nomination as an independent candidate.

The constituency had been allotted to the DMK's alliance partner, the PMK.

Resentment

The allotment of Vedaranyam to the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) had caused resentment among the DMK cadres as Mr. Vedarathinam has a formidable following.
