All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa filed her nomination papers for the Srirangam constituency here on Thursday.

Ms. Jayalalithaa, who flew down to the city from Chennai by a special flight earlier, filed her nomination before P. Gunasekaran, Assistant Commissioner (Land Reforms) and Returning Officer of the Srirangam constituency, at the old Collectorate building in the city. Accompanied by her friend Sasikala, Ms. Jayalalithaa arrived at the office at around 11 a.m. and filed her papers.

Tension prevailed for some time in front of the Collectorate complex, as cadres of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the AIADMK were involved in a minor skirmish when Transport Minister K.N.Nehru, contesting from the Tiruchi West constituency, also arrived there for filing his nominations. The slogan shouting volunteers from both sides indulged in verbal exchanges even as Ms. Jayalalithaa was filing her nominations. A stone and footwear were said to have been pelted against each other by the cadre of the rival parties.

Police intervened to bring the situation under control. When asked about the incident at a press conference later, Ms.Jayalalithaa said she was not aware of it.
