Farmers complain against unit

A group of farmers and their family members from Padiyur petitioned Collector K.S. Palanisamy on Monday in which they alleged that an industrial unit manufacturing water tanks from ‘liner low-density polyethylene’ (LLDP) in the area was causing pollution and odour.

B. Jayaprakash, one of the petitioners, told reporters that the unit was functioning for one year.

“In the recent times, odour was unbearable and also many people in the area started complaining of respiratory problems which point to air pollution”, he said.

The petitioners urged the Collector to intervene in the issue and take appropriate action against the unit.

When contacted, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials told ‘The Hindu’ that there was not a question of any pollution causing harm to human beings as the said unit had been under the ‘orange’ category (harmless industry).

“Since the complaint has come, anyway we will once again inspect the unit”, said the official.
