The Madras High Court Bench here on Friday directed the Ramanathapuram police to complete within six months the investigation into the death of Rameswaram fisherman K. Britjo, who was shot dead in the high seas allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy on March 6.

It sought a final report to be filed before the lower court.

A Division Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Sathish Kumar passed the order while disposing of a public interest litigation petition filed by D. Raju of Naam Tamilar Katchi seeking a direction to the Centre as well as State government to extradite the accused from the island nation and prosecute them here.

It was reported to the court that the police were yet to ascertain whether the shooting took place in Indian waters or beyond the International Maritime Boundary Line between the two nations.

The investigators were in the process of analysing data from a GPS device recovered from the fisherman’s boat.
