An emergency surgery was performed on a hound affected with chronic septic open wound at the right pin bone region followed by septic peritonitis at the Veterinary College and Research Institute at Ramayyanpatti near here recently.

A two-year-old intact female ‘Chippiparai’ dog, weighing about 15 kg, had suffered distended abdomen and reduced body weight since a week.

Its master T. Arumai Durai of Nanguneri brought the hound to the veterinary college for clinical examination.

As examinations revealed purulent materials, the surgery was performed under general anaesthesia and around four litres of purulent materials were drained.

A fistulous tract was noticed between the wound lateral to the right pin bone and the abdominal cavity, which was sutured under the guidance of M. Thirunavukkarasu, Dean, VCRI. Veterinarians M. Shiju Simon and P.A. Enbavelan performed the surgery following the diagnosis by M.G. Jayathangaraj, Professor and Head, Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, VCRI.

A week after the surgery, the hound recovered wonderfully well.
