Demand for relocating bus stand

May 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - NAMAKKAL:

The municipal bus stand located in the heart of the town is congested round-the-clock and commuters and the public have been demanding for long to shift it to another location.

Mofussil buses, town buses and mini buses are parked in the bus stand where space crunch continues to be a major cause for congestion.

Only four bays are allotted to buses proceeding towards Salem and 10 bays are allotted for buses proceeding towards Madurai, Tiruchi, Karur and Erode.

With increase in bus services to all the cities, mofussil buses are parked in a haphazard manner. The bus stand premises witnesses heated exchange of words between drivers as they fight for space for parking the buses.

The bus stand lacks basic amenities including, waiting halls, seats, toilets, drinking water and medical facility.

Commuters have been demanding shifting of the bus stand so that there is space to create these facilities. Though the State government had, in 2013, announced establishing new bus stand in Mudalaipatti on the Bengaluru – Madurai National Highway 44 at Rs. 35 crore, except for survey of land, work has not progressed.

While the municipality allotted Rs. 1 crore for purchase of land for the bus stand, traders and shopkeepers protested against shifting it and later political intervention prevented the project from being implemented.

The town has narrow roads and is unable to meet the growing vehicular traffic. Also, the entry of sand-laden lorries and heavy vehicles from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. every day is keeping the roads fully occupied.
