Adequate arrangements have been made at the Chennai airport to receive delegates attending the World Classical Tamil Conference, beginning in Coimbatore on June 23.
Airport Director E.P. Hareendranathan told TheHindu that four new reception counters with telephone connection had been set up. One counter each would function at international arrival and departure and domestic arrival and departure terminals.
The counters were opened on Wednesday and will function till June 30.
Each counter is being manned by three persons who will come in shifts. The State government has deputed its officials for manning the counters at the airport, he said.
About parking facility, Mr. Hareendranathan said the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had earmarked a separate car parking slot for delegates/participants of the conference. At any given time 20 cars could be parked. Apart from this, additional area had been allocated for parking bigger vehicles engaged to pick up the delegates/participants.
Nearly 4,000 delegates are expected to transit through the Chennai airport. State government sources said so far they had received confirmation from nearly 300 delegates from abroad.
Immigration authorities said delegates from Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Mauritius were expected in large number. Immigration authorities would establish four new counters exclusively the delegates/participants.
Collectors of Chennai, Kancheepuram and Ramanathapuram have been designated as coordinators who will receive the delegates at the airport, government sources said.
