A day after the Centre informed the Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) that it is for the Tamil Nadu government to select an appropriate location for establishing an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the State, Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar on Friday told the Legislative Assembly that the Centre would decide on the site, on the basis of the reports filed by the respective collectors of the five districts being considered for the project.
Details sought
Responding to Opposition leader M.K. Stalin, who sought to know whether the government had decided on the site, since the Centre had left the matter to the State, Mr. Vijaya Baskar said that the Centre had, on May 24, asked for specific details about the five places under consideration for hosting the institute.
The details sought included the existence of schools and job opportunities in the five areas — Madurai, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Chengalpet and Perundurai—and the respective district collectors had been asked to report on the merits and demerits of establishing the institute in their district, the Minister said, adding, “After receiving the report, the Centre would take a final decision.”
