Case against 51 for attempting to hold meeting without permission

The police had registered case against 51 persons, including a panchayat president, for attempting to conduct meeting without permission in Belukurichi here on Friday evening.

Dispute

A dispute prevailed between the panchayat and shopkeepers over erecting shops in the weekly market on the Mariamman temple premises in Belukurichi.

Revenue Divisional Officer M. Kannan recently conducted a peace meeting.

Judgment

On Friday, the panchayat administration said that they received a favourable judgment in the Madras High Court and planned for conducting a meeting.

However, it is said that no permission was obtained from the election officials.

The police prevented them from conducting the meeting. Based on a complaint, the Belukurichi police registered a violation case against 51 persons, including panchayat president Varadaraj. Police personnel were posted in the market area to prevent any untoward incident.

Report

Officials said that the court had asked them to inspect the market and submit a report regarding the ownership of the land.
