Blood donation camp

The National Service Scheme units of Thiagarajar College, Madurai, organised a blood donation camp in memory of founder Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar on July 29 in association with Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH). Over 120 persons, including students and staff, donated blood at the camp. A certificate of appreciation was given to the donors by the GRH. The camp was inaugurated by M. Eyini, Principal. R. Srinivasan, Dean; and NSS Programme Officers C.S. Senthil, K. Poornima Kani, S. Kasi, I. Chitra and T. Muthukumar took part in the camp.

MSV remembered

The Readers’ Forum of Karumuttu Thiagarajan-Visalaksi Memorial Library of Saraswathi Narayanan College, Madurai, organised a meeting to pay homage to music director M.S. Viswanathan recently. M. Kannan, Principal, presided over the meeting. A.S. Kumar, Librarian, welcomed the gathering. G.R. Mahadevan, a close associate of singer T.M. Soundararajan, paid tributes to M.S. Viswanathan by recalling his achievements in the field of film music. He hailed M.S. Viswanathan as a trendsetter, who introduced many new musical nuances. Rathika of III B.Sc.(Maths) proposed a vote of thanks.

Contribution of Kamaraj

The N. M. S. Sermathai Vasan College of Women, Madurai, celebrated K. Kamaraj’s birth anniversary on July 25 with a talk on the former Chief Minister’s contribution to the development of Tamil Nadu, especially in education, by M. Bismillah Khan, High Court advocate. D. Nallathambi, treasurer, welcomed the gathering. G. Mariskumar delivered the presidential address. Secretary G. Karikolraj and vice-president A.M. Selvarajan offered felicitations. Mr. Bismillah Khan also distributed prizes to winners of various competitions held on the occasion. Vice-Principal D. Karthigarani proposed a vote of thanks.

‘PIO-Maths’15

Activities of the association of the Department of Mathematics of Madurai Sivakasi Nadars Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College, Poovanthi, ‘PIO-Maths’15,’ were inaugurated on July 27. Emmanuel Jebarajan, Visiting Professor, Christ University, Bengaluru, delivered a lecture on ‘Permutation and memory management’ on the occasion. K. Sornadevi, Head of the department, welcomed the gathering. K.M. John Natesan, college committee member, delivered the inaugural address. C. Ramalakshmi, Principal, offered felicitations. K. Salai Aranganayaki, Assistant Professor, presented the plan of activities for the academic year. M. Subha, Assistant Professor, proposed a vote of thanks.

The activities of NexGen’15, the association of the Department of Computer Science of Madurai Sivakasi Nadars Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College, Poovanthi, were inaugurated for the current academic year on August 5. R. Indra, Head, Department of Computer Science, Government Arts College for Women, Sivaganga, delivered a talk on ‘Semantic web and social networking’ on the occasion. Head of the department K. Sudharani welcomed the gathering. J. Ashok, assistant secretary, delivered the presidential address. K. Mahalakshmi, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, proposed a vote of thanks.

“Dreamers will succeed”

The 22nd Corporate Voice programme for third and final year students was held at Vickram College of Engineering, Arasanoor, on July 31. The chief guest, Vigneshwari, civil engineer and 326th ranker in Civil Services examinations, in her address on Civil Services examinations, said that dreamers would always succeed in life than those dealing with facts. She also motivated them to take some one as inspiration but have a unique plan for their future. They should be prepared to accept both positive and negative consequences of their plan. Ms. Vigneshwari also insisted that students should read the newspaper daily. Janani from EEE department welcomed the gathering. Vijay Sreenivasan, Director, delivered the presidential address. S. Nagarajan, Principal, proposed a vote of thanks.

Ways to master communication skills

The Department of English of Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, Madurai, conducted a seven-day faculty development programme for the staff from the Department of Science and Humanities on the topic, ‘Ways to master communication skills,’ from July 13. The resource persons were T. Smiles, Head of the department, R. Ananth Babu, K. Sasirekha, J. Rachael Bhuvaneshwari, M. Raja, B. Vishalakshi and Esther Blessy. The importance and need for effective communication and ways and means to master communication skills were discussed at the programme. On the concluding day, the Principal, N. Suresh Kumar, and vice-chairman Ganesh Natrajan interacted with the participants and distributed certificates.

Over 100 students donated blood at a blood donation camp organised by the Red Cross Society of Saraswathi Narayanan College, Madurai, recently. It was inaugurated by M. Kannan, Principal.

Graduation Day

The 16th Graduation Day of Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti, was held on August 2 in which 125 university rank holders and 866 other candidates received their degree certificates. S. Mohamed Jaleel, chairman, presided over the function. M. Jeyachandran of Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi, delivered the Graduation Day address and gave away the awards to achievers. J. Daniel Chellppa, Senior Scientist, Baba Atomic Research Centre, distributed the degree certificates. Asan M. Ariff of South West Kidney Institute, Arizona, delivered a speech on 'Bio-medicine.
