Body of Pudukottai MLA cremated, driver arrested

The body of S.P. Muthukumaran, Communist Party of India (CPI) MLA of Pudukottai, who was killed in a road accident on Sunday after his car overturned following the burst of one of the tyres, was cremated at his native village Neduvasal, near Alangudi on Monday.

Leaders of the CPI including D. Pandian and R. Nallakannu, and Puthiya Tamizhagam leader N. Krishnasamy paid their homage to the mortal remains of Muthukumaran.

MLAs K. Bala Bharathi, A. Laser, Arumugam, Annadurai, Balakrishnan, Rangarajan, Ulaganathan, Ganeshkumar, Lingamuthu, Ponnu. Pandi; Tiruchi AIADMK MP P. Kumar; former union minister and Congress leader Su. Thirunavukkarasar; Pudukottai DMK district secretary Periyannan Arasu; Marumalarchi DMK district secretary Chandrasekaran; and Pudukottai municipal chairman V.R. Karthick Thondaiman paid their tributes. A large number of cadre took part in the funeral procession.

Driver arrested

In the meanwhile, the Annavasal police have arrested car driver S. Manikandan. Police said a case was registered under Sec. 279, 337 and 304 A of IPC. The arrest was effected based on a complaint by Muruganandam, Pudukottai unit secretary of the party, another occupant of the car.
