A group of people attacked the convoy of BJP candidate Durai Kannan, seeking election in Ramanathapuram assembly segment, when he visited Devipattinam area to canvass for votes on Sunday evening.

As the candidate entered the costal town, dominated by a particular community of people, a group of people attacked the propaganda van by pelting stones and tore the banners.

They resisted the attack and went inside the town and when they returned, the group of about 200 people resorted to stone pelting again, Mr Kannan told The Hindu .

He himself was hit by a stone, he said. “The police should take stern action against them,” he said.

Later, the candidate along with BJP volunteers staged a road roko at Ragunathapuram, demanding action against the group. Additional Superintendent of Police S. Vellaidurai pacified them and assured to take action. Police registered a case and arrested one person in this connection.

Meanwhile, former BJP state president C.P. Radhakrishnan, who was here to campaign for the party, visited the party men at Ragunathapuram along with district president K Muraleedharan and demanded action against the attackers. The police should nip in the bud attempts being made by anti-socials trying to disturb social harmony and communal amity in the district, he said.
