Bill to hike MLAs’ salary, perks raises DMK’s hackles

Revision to take retrospective effect from July 1 last year

Despite opposition from the DMK, the ruling AIADMK government tabled a Bill for suitably amending the Tamil Nadu Payment of Salaries Act, 1951, in the Assembly on Wednesday.

Soon after the Bill was introduced in the Assembly by Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, who is handling the finance portfolio, DMK whip R. Sakkarapani opposed it by making some statements, which the Chair disallowed.

According to the Bill, the government has decided to implement the revision of pay with effect from July 1, 2017, and the additional expenditure to be incurred as a result of the proposed legislation would be approximately ₹25.32 crore per annum.

As per the Statement of Objects and Reasons of the Bill, the government has decided to enhance the salary of all the members of the Legislative Assembly from ₹8,000 to ₹30,000.

Contingency allowance

While the compensatory allowance payable to the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, the Ministers, the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Government Whip would be enhanced from ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 per month, the same would be enhanced from ₹7,000 to ₹10,000 for each of the MLAs.

While the contingency allowance for the CM, the Deputy CM, the Speaker and the Ministers would be enhanced from ₹4,000 to ₹10,000 per month, the same would be enhanced fom ₹3,500 to ₹7,500 for the Deputy Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Government Whip. The constituency allowance of all MLAs would be enhanced from ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 per month.

The consolidated allowance, the telephone allowance, the vehicle allowance, the postal allowance and the pension of the former MLAs would also be increased.
