The young boys and girls taking part in the chess tournament were taken by pleasant surprise when Salem District Collector V. Sampath visited the venue all of a sudden on Sunday afternoon to watch the players in action.

Mr. Sampath, a chess player in his college days, visited the venue voluntarily when the players were engaged in the final round. He had a pep talk with some of the youngsters.

He later went to the stage and posed some questions regarding the game of chess.

He was pleasantly surprised to find many of the youngsters giving correct answer.

The Collector presented a shawl to R. Hari Akash, a class V student of Senthil Public School, Salem, the youngest among the lot, who gave correct answer to one of his questions.
