DINDIGUL: Dindigul city had a sophisticated control room connected with a CCTV network, covering the entire district, a first of its kind in the South Zone of police administration, said Superintendent of Police A. Saravanan.
Interacting with media persons here on Sunday, he said prime roads of the city were under CCTV camera coverage. To ensure presence of the police in every nook and cranny, the number of bike patrols, equipped with PA system, siren and flashers, had been increased from 40 to 55 this year.
Patrolling had curbed chain snatching, house break-ins and robberies. Two specially trained police personnel were deputed to function as receptionist in each police station.
The number of murder cases registered came down to 53 in 2016. Sixty cases were registered in 2014 and 57 in 2015.
The number of attempt-to-murder cases was at 73 in 2016 as against 81 cases recorded in 2015. Hurt cases came down to 470 from 602 cases registered in 2015. Robbery cases too fell to 20 this year as against 42 recorded in 2015.
The SP said the number of house break-ins came down to 125 from 157 registered in 2015. Properties worth about Rs. 3.79 crore were recovered in burglary cases in 2016.
To curtail criminal activities, 58 criminals were detained under the Goondas Act in 2016. Security proceedings under preventive measures had been initiated against 1,527 antisocial elements, he said.
Mr. Saravanan said to scale down motor vehicle accidents, 1,50,487 motor petty cases were registered and a total fine of Rs. 1.61 crore was slapped on traffic rule violators. Twenty one accused, involved in 12 cases, were awarded life imprisonment, the highest conviction rate in the last five years.
For the first time, tribals living at two remote villages in Kodaikanal hill – Moongilpallam and Valankulam – got solar lamps due to the efforts of the police. Tarpaulin sheets were issued to 330 families. In addition, coaching classes for Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission examinations were conducted for 33 tribal students. Educational, sports and medical aid were also given to the tribal people, he added.
