54 fishermen get coracles

The State Fisheries Department handed over coracles to 54 fishermen of Mettur Dam under the National Agricultural Development Programme (NAPD).

The coracles, each costing Rs. 9,250, were provided to the members of the Mettur Fishermen Cooperative Society at 50 per cent subsidised rate. S. Semmalai, MLA, handed over the coracles to the beneficiaries at a function held at the Fisheries Department office, Mettur Dam, on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, he explained the various programmes being implemented by the State Government for improving the living standard of fishermen and other weaker sections.

M. Karthikeyan, Regional Deputy Director, Fisheries Department, C. Subramanian, Assistant Director, M. Kathiresan, Fisheries Inspector, and Lalitha Saravanan, Mettur municipal chairperson, were present on the occasion.
