Friends and well-wishers of Anand Jon, sentenced in a United States court to 59 years of prison for sexual assault, got together here on Thursday to launch the website www.justiceforanandjon.com. It seeks to help and support the release of the fashion designer. The event also happened to be the first meeting of the Justice for Anand Jon Trust.
“Anand is going to face a fresh trial by a New York court in December and we hope justice prevails,” said Anand's mother Sashi Abraham. Launching the website, actor-director Suhasini Maniratnam spoke about the determination and dedication of Ms. Abraham. “I hope some miracle takes place in this case,” she said.
The trustees are seeking help legally, financially or by creating the right image for Anand Jon. Actor Madan Bob and Nanda Govind representing the Confederation of Tamil Nadu Malayalees' Association and other well-wishers spoke. Musical performances offering support and consolation to the family were also rendered.

A dear friend of mine was raped by that monster, anand jon. She was not one of the women who testified against him in court, but was a victim of his hideous acts nonetheless. The attack has left her distrustful of men and she has difficulty even now, close to a decade later. Justice was served here. It is good this predator is locked up for pretty much the rest of his life. Society is safer for it.
In addition to the new trial in New York (he has already been convicted in California), Anand Jon faces charges and potential trial in the state of Texas. So if he can win in New York, most likely he will have to defend himself again in Texas. And if he loses in New York (very likely given what happened in California), Texas may not even bother to try him. Anand Jon and his family is allowed to appeal his conviction in California and they are planning to do so. Why not let this run its course? The appeals process, and the trial in New York and possibly Texas? Having lived in the US for most of my life, and now working in India, I have a lot of faith in the US judicial system. Yes, there are problems, there are significant problems related to race (and income), but Anand Jon's case is not one of them. He had a very unhealthy outlook towards women, and he got busted. He may have survived conviction and jail in India, but definitely not in the US.
Everybody who believes that Anand was and still innocent of his crimes have been only seen the one sided story presented by his family. Yes there were rapes, and not to mention the abortions that he and his family took care of when he was still in India in his late teens and in the states thru out his twenties.
It is not a fresh trial in New York, it is yet another trial. He was tried and convicted
in California, now there is another trial in New York. What the family does not tell u
is that he was already on probation in California for misbehaving with a minor girl.
Also he did not "pass" a lie detector test cause lie detectors are not allowed in
American courts. Also the lie detector test was paid for by him. That means his
lawyers chose the questions to be answered. How convenient.
Yup, if you want the law to be like in India, where there are no consequences, then
you will get the mess that we have in India. He played with fire and got burnt.
