With the party poised for a win in Goa and the SAD-BJP alliance leading in Punjab, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday described its performance in the assembly elections as a “mixed bag”.
“It’s a mixed bag for BJP,” Ms. Swaraj told reporters outside the party office.
“We have won Punjab, we are winning Goa, we are nearing the majority in Uttarakhand also,” she added.
In Punjab, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine appears poised for victory. In Goa too it is leading.
In Uttarakhand, it is running neck-and-neck with the Congress, while in Uttar Pradesh it is positioned behind the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party.
She accepted that the party “could not do well” in Uttar Pradesh.
“The electorate wanted to get rid of BSP (Bhujan Samaj Party)—government and they selected SP (Samajwadi Party) as an alternative,” she said.
“It would have been very good had we done well in UP also. In three states, we have performed well,” Ms. Swaraj said.

the main dilemma bjp is suffering at present is the absence of a national face whom they can project as their model. As varun gandhi had said earlier that"BJP has 51 candidates for prime ministers post". After atal jee bjp had lost its charm. Some one had commented that people were forced to choose lesser evil in UP,frankly speaking it is defeat of democracy.caste barriers had stopped BJP to use there star CM MODI. Given an anti government wave in UP BJP could have done better,if some senior ministers have not insisted on Modi.
Poor BJP. Its pretense to be a national party has been exposed. How can you be a national party you and leave out 20% people from your preview. not only ignore them but hate them?
To national parties UP is crucial state respect to having maximum parliamentary constituency and most of PM candidates delivered also in Indian political history. Again BJP have to put up its brave face in forthcoming big election if it wishes to form coalition government under its leadership. In next parliamentary election either congress or BJP which party wins more than 200 MP's gets the chance to form government by managing alliance parties. But this performance certainly blow to both the parties as it constitutes 80 parliamentary seats and if either of the party could manage to win between 35 to 40 is reduces the pressure on dependence on coalition partners and can have the chance to deliver good governance without too many compromises and uncertainties.
