Educationist Ms. Y.G. Parthasarathy, who received the Padma Shri award from President Pratibha Patil in New Delhi on Wednesday, saw in the honour the recognition of her tireless and passionate journey to provide quality education for school students.

At a recent function held soon after it was announced that she had been nominated for the award, Ms. Parthasarathy emphasised the need for accountability, integrity and responsibility among teachers.

Whether it is her current involvement in bringing the Research Science Institute (RSI) programme, organised at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to India or supporting the Sundara Cholavaram School, a panchayat union school on the outskirts of the city, Ms. Parthasarathy has constantly been engaging with the quality aspect of school education.

Learning by rote

An advocate of learning by doing rather than by rote, Ms. Parthasarathy believes the RSI programme would give students the much-needed hands on exposure in learning.
