Puducherry police is investigating a death threat issued to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and former Union Minister V. Narayanasamy. Mr. Gandhi is scheduled to visit Karaikal on Tuesday.

The terse letter in Tamil which was addressed to Mr. Narayanasamy warns him that if he dared to criticise the "loading contract' in the Mettupalayam industrial area one more time, he and the "son of former Prime Minister" would be blown to bits.

When contacted, Inspector General of Police in Puducherry Praveer Ranjan confirmed that Mr. Narayansamy had forwarded the anonymous letter and said the police was investigating the matter.

A team, including Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, treasurer Motilal Vohra, Congress Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma, and MP Rajiv Shukla, met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and apprised him about the threat to the Congress vice-president’s life.

“The Home Minister has assured us of prompt action and security enhancement. He has also assured us that the agencies of the Centre and the States and SPG will be alerted about the threat that has been received,” Mr. Sharma told reporters.
