In an apparent move to counter the push for quota in promotion for SC/ST in government jobs, Samajwadi Party in Rajya Sabha on Monday demanded proportionate reservation for Muslims through a Constitutional amendment.
The issue triggered an uproar in the House in the morning with SP members rushing into the Well leading to its adjournment for 30 minutes during Question Hour.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Ram Gopal Yadav (SP) said the Rajinder Sachar Committee in its report pointed out that the condition of Muslims was worse than other minority communities and so there should a Constitutional amendment to provide for quota to Muslims.
“When quota in promotion (for SC/ST) can be given by amending Constitution, then why Muslims should not be given reservation in proportion to their population through a Constitution Amendment Bill,” Yadav asked.
LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan and RJD members supported him.
Earlier, as soon as the House met for the day, Mr. Yadav said he has given a notice for suspension of Question Hour to take up the issue.
The SP members rushed into the Well and stood near the podium raising slogans for implementation of the Sachar Committee report.
The Sachar Committee was Commissioned in 2005 to prepare a report on the social, economic and educational condition of the Muslim community of India. It had concluded that status of Indian Muslims are below the conditions of SCs and STs.
“Please don’t come into the Well. This is not allowed. Please go back to your places,” Chairman Hamid Ansari pleaded with the SP members. As they did not relent, he adjourned the House for 30 minutes.
SP’s move is timed with the controversial quota bill (The Constitution 117th amendment bill, 2012,) which was taken up in the House on Friday under apparent pressure from BSP chief Mayawati and is listed for consideration and passage on Monday.

BSP got her way to please her vote bank - SC/STs. Now SP counters and tries to retain its vote bank by demanding quota for muslims.
They dont feel anything for common people.
-> Mulayam Singh is not really interested in providing reservation to Muslims. By raising the issue of Muslim reservation he thinks he will altogether prevent reservation as BJP will not allow reservation for Muslims -- Mulayam's target group is Yadavs and he is well known to use Muslims for his political causes(he even tried to bring in Kalyan Singh -- the BJP Chief Minister of UP during Babri Masjid demolition).
If Mulayam Singh is really interested in providing reservation, he can follow the Andhra Pradesh Govt's way where reservation has been provided to Muslims.
This quota theory is simply dividing our society. A bad politics. And they just ruin our life, our dream and our future too.
The sachar committee report is an eye opener . The conditions of Muslims that were prevelant during the time of partiiton of Pak and the reasons said during that time justifying partition , think would once again remerge soon and head for another partition . we need to definetly have a plan/ action to uplift our Indian Muslims .
The secular politicians and the secular media are all in favor of more reservations.
If parliament believes that even after 60 years of reservation SCs/STs are not represented properly then what is the meaning implementing such a flawed policy, Scrap it.
If need for 100% reservation is felt implement if for another 50 years so that the generation after that will have a reservation free india
On one hand SP is objecting to quota bill, on the other they are asking
for quota for muslims. It is obviously vote bank politics. All
politicians should first serve in their constituencies, live with poor
people, eat one meal a day, rthen they will realise who really need the
quota. Only economical backward deserve quota, that too at lower ranks
only.
These politicians will end up dividing India in the name of caste, religion and what not.
Important issues encounter the country. Instead of getting heads down and solving them, politicians are clearly putting their own party interests above national interests.
