The Union government has ordered an inquiry into the anchoring of a United States ship, reportedly laden with radioactive substances, off the Alang coast in Gujarat.
“We are extremely concerned about the anchoring of the ship and have sought an enquiry into the issue, the report of which should be available within three or four days,” Minister of State for (Independent Charge) Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh told reporters here on Wednesday.
The ship, Platinum-II, anchored a couple of days ago after it was reportedly given permission by the Gujarat State Pollution Control Board.
However, it had not been given permission for breaking, Mr. Ramesh said.
“We have asked the enquiry team to probe into how the permission to anchor was granted to the ship carrying toxic waste, and we expect an interim report within a couple of days,” Mr. Ramesh said.
