The Central government granted one-year extension to Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha on Monday, whose two-year term is scheduled to end on June 12.

With Mr. Sinha’s extension, it has become clear that Gujarat cadre IAS and current revenue secretary Hasmukh Adhia will most likely become the next Cabinet secretary from June 2018. “Mr. Sinha’s extension was almost certainty and now since it has been cleared, it’s almost certain that Mr. Adhia will be the next Cabinet secretary,” a top bureaucrat said , adding, “Mr. Adhia remains one of the most trusted secretaries of the PMO.”

The government is also likely to carry out a reshuffle in the top bureaucracy to fill in vacancies.
