A youth arrested for allegedly committing an act of sacrilege at the Aap Shambu Temple in Roopnagar last week has been detained under the provisions of the stringent Public Safety Act.

“District Administration, in Jammu has ordered detention of Yasir Alfaz under Public Safety Act (PSA), in connection with his involvement in the sacrilegious act at Aap Shambu Temple in Janipur on June 14,” an official spokesperson said here.

His detention under the provisions of the act took place on Wednesday less than 24 hours before he had to be produced before duty magistrate after his six day police remand.

Yasir allegedly entered the temple and broke some items and the windowpanes, a police officer said.

The incident sparked violence and arson in the city.

On June 16, another man entered a temple in the Nanak Nagar area and tried to vandalise it, again triggering violent protests.
