Six women escape from Goa govt. home

August 24, 2016 12:44 am | Updated 12:44 am IST - PANAJI:

Nine women escaped from the State government’s protective home for rescued women at Merces near here on Monday night. Three of them were, however, caught by the police immediately.

Ms. Shilpa Shinde, Director, Goa Women and Child Development, speaking to The Hindu on Tuesday confirmed the escape and said six women — four from Bangladesh and one each from Uzbekistan and Nepal — were still missing. A police search operation was underway, she said.

Ms. Shinde said on Monday evening, the security guard at the home was late for duty. Taking advantage of his absence, at around 8.30 p.m., the women in the home overpowered the sole female constable on duty and escaped by jumping over the compound wall of the premises. However, an alert driver of the protective home called the police and in a search operation that followed, three inmates were apprehended.
