Woman dies, daughter-in-law injured in U.P. acid attack

A 55-year-old woman was killed and her 32-year-old daughter-in-law suffered severe burns when two unknown assailants poured acid on them in Barhalganj town of Gorakhpur district in Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

The deceased, Vindhyavasini, and her daughter-in-law, Shilpi, were alone in their house when two persons barged in around 2 p.m. and demanded the keys of the almirah.

According to the police, when they refused to hand over the keys, the two poured acid on the women.

While the mother-in-law died, the daughter-in-law received burns in her hands. She has been admitted to the District Hospital in Gorakhpur, the police said.

Ankit, son of the deceased, had gone to his cloth shop when the incident occurred.

A case has been registered at the Barhalganj police station. No arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, the body of a 19-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in Mirzapur Jangal village under Jahangirganj police station area in Ambedkarnagar district late on Sunday night.

An FIR was lodged at Jahangirganj police station by the deceased’s brother against one Sandeep, his brother Kuldip and sister, Reena.
