The Station House Officer (SHO) and a woman constable of Swarupganj police station in Sirohi district of Rajasthan were placed under suspension and the entire staff shifted after a 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide while in custody.

Mamata allegedly hung herself with her dupatta in the washroom at 6 a.m. on Monday while the woman constable Tarawati stood guard outside. Mamata had been arrested, along with her two brothers — Mukesh and Suresh — in connection with the murder of a man, Ashok, with whom she was reportedly having an affair. Ashok, who was a resident of Shergarh, was found murdered on September 30.

According to police, Mamata had been brought to the station on Sunday for questioning. While her brothers were sent to police custody by the court, she was to be produced before a magistrate on Monday morning.

When Mamata did not come out of the washroom for a very long time, the police broke open the door and found her hanging.

Within hours of the incident, SHO Ishwar Pareek and constable Tarawati were placed under suspension. While the district administration has ordered an enquiry into the custodial death, Rajasthan State Women’s Commission chairperson Lad Kumari Jain would visit Sirohi on Tuesday to ascertain the facts.

The commission has already asked Jan Chetna Manch, an NGO , to help them in the case.
