One more person died after consuming spurious liquor, taking the toll in the hooch tragedy in Bhadoi and Varanasi districts to 11, officials said here on Monday.
“Narendra Singh, who was undergoing treatment at a hospital after consuming spurious liquor, died today,” District Magistrate Varanasi Ravindra said.
Ten people, including three women, died and 13 others were hospitalised on Sunday after consuming spurious liquor in the two districts of Uttar Pradesh.
Six died at Chauri in Bhadohi, four deaths were reported from Shivdaspur village in Varanasi, police said.
Three policemen, including an SHO, and five excise officials had been suspended and a huge quantity of illicit brew seized in raids by the police in the two districts.
“Five departmental employees including two excise inspectors Sanjay Vidyarthi and Rajeshwar Maurya, who were prima facie found responsible for the incident, have been placed under suspension with immediate effect,” Excise Commissioner Sudhir M Bobade had said.
A special team led by a joint excise commissioner along with additional excise commissioner has been asked to probe into the incident.
Bhadoi SP Gyaneshwar Tiwari said a case has been lodged against seven persons at Chauri police station and three have been arrested.
