Will support Centre in river cleaning: Akhilesh

November 13, 2014 02:04 am | Updated 02:04 am IST - LUCKNOW:

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said his government would cooperate with the Centre in cleaning all rivers in the State.

He also asked people to come forward and join his government’s efforts to clean Gomti river, the lifeline of the State capital.

“Rivers are part of our culture and identity. We will work to save the rivers. The government will fully cooperate with the Centre in cleaning of rivers,” he said after inaugurating the Junior National Rowing Championships here.

“In earlier times trade was done through waterways. It is the good fortune of Lucknow that a river flows through it and important buildings are situated on its banks,” he added.

“My govt. will work towards the development of the Gomti River front & cleaning up with active participation of the people & govt.”, he tweeted after the event.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi nominated Akhilesh along with eight other prominent figures to promote the Centre’s cleanliness programme in the State.
