A special resolution to condole the death of former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu will be moved in the State Assembly in its budget session to begin on March 9.
“A resolution of condolence on the demise of Jyoti Basu will be moved by the Speaker on March 10. Leaders of all political parties will participate in the discussions after which the House will adjourn for the day,” Syed Mohammed Masih, the Chief Government Whip told The Hindu here on Monday.
The State’s budget will be presented before the House by the Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta on March 22.
Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu, who served as the Chief Minister of the State for 23 years was first elected to the Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1946 from the Railway constituency and after Independence from the Baranagar constituency in 1952.
The decision was taken at an all-party meeting called by the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly Hasim Abdul Halim, where it was decided that the session will begin on March 9.
“While the deteriorating law and order condition in the State and a complete constitutional breakdown will of course be raised by the Opposition benches, one of the main issues that we seek clearance on is the allotment of land,” said senior Trinamool Congress leader and the Leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee.
“How much land has been given and to which industrialists it has been granted must be clarified by the government,” Mr. Chatterjee said adding that there were reports of several irregularities.
The Opposition will also demand a drive for the seizing of illegal arms and ammunition from political cadres in order to check the political violence in the State, he added.
