Irate candidates resorted to violence and fought a pitched battle with the police in many parts of the State in protest against the alleged anomalies in the recruitment of constables and firemen in Uttar Pradesh police. The results of the examinations, conducted in December 2014 were declared recently, but the examinees have alleged that many discrepancies were committed in the finalisation of the successful candidates eligible for medical examination.

It has been alleged that discrimination has been committed in calling the candidates for medical examination. The cut off marks for being eligible for the medical examination has been tampered with, it has been alleged.

22 lakh candidates

About 22 lakh candidates had written the examination for 41610 posts of constables in the civil police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and firemen.

The students staged a road jam at Karhal crossing in the Samajwadi Party stronghold of Mainpuri and created a ruckus on Sunday. The jam lasted for about an hour before the police resorted to lathi charge to chase away the protesting candidates. Reports said the students raised slogans against the Samajwadi Party Government and alleged that those close to the ruling party have been declared successful while the others have been failed.

In Lucknow, about three dozen candidates raising anti-Government slogans staged a demonstration opposite the Vidhan Bhawan building. High drama followed when some candidates climbed a tree opposite gate number 9 of the Vidhan Bhawan building and threatened to commit suicide. A crane was requisitioned by the police to enable the students to climb down the tree.

A police spokesman said protest demonstrations by candidates were also held in Kanpur, Hardoi, Allahabad and Azamgarh. Violence erupted in Allahabad on Saturday where the irate candidates damaged roadways buses and several vehicles in the Civil Lines areas of the town. The police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the unruly mob. Reports said the candidates pelted stones on the residence of a Samajwadi Party MLA. No complaint was registered with the local police.
