Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh on Wednesday sought to boost the morale of functionaries, saying ups and downs in politics were not unusual, even as party leaders defended Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in the wake of the poll rout in Uttar Pradesh.
In their post-Lok Sabha poll reports submitted to Mr. Singh, district and city unit presidents and the party general secretaries blamed the SP’s loss on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “conspiracy” to mislead the people. They lauded the Chief Minister for working with honesty in the last two years and credited him with launching a development agenda.
Mr. Yadav has been under fire for the SP’s disastrous performance in the Lok Sabha elections with the BJP claiming that it was a mandate against the State government. Senior BJP leader and Deoria MP, Kalraj Mishra and the State unit president, Laxmikant Bajpai have demanded the Chief Minister’s resignation.
The SP president said workers and leaders should work for public welfare. He was of the view that the SP had the largest number of dedicated workers.
