A fresh incident of a female passenger alleging molestation by the driver of Uber has come to the fore in Kolkata.

Driver Santu Parmanik was arrested on charges of outraging the modesty of a woman and criminal intimidation, among other charges.

A local court on Wednesday remanded the driver to 14 days' judicial custody.

According to sources, the woman, along with a friend, took the cab service on Monday from JD Block in Salt Lake. After the friend got down at Beliaghata, the cab proceeded towards her residence in south Kolkata.

According to the complainant, the driver misbehaved with her and threatened to rape her. She subsequently filed a complaint at the Bidhannagar North police station the next day. The driver was arrested from Patuli in south Kolkata.

Meanwhile, Uber has assured that the company has shared “the driver and trip details with the police and will continue to support investigations as required.”
