The heavy rain that lashed the Union Territory on Saturday resulted in the collapse of over 100 huts and the death of two persons.
According to Collector G. Rajesh Chandra, a woman in Karaikal died after a wall in her house collapsed.
The body of an elderly man in Thirubhuvanai of the Puducherry region, who was reported missing two days ago, was found in a drain on Saturday afternoon in a partially decomposed state.
Mr. Chandra said the man had slipped and fallen into the drain.
In the 24-hour period that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday, the region received a total rainfall of 5.5 cm.
Heavy rain likely
Mr. Chandra said the weather office had forecast heavy rain for the next 24 hours.
All schools have been kept open to accommodate people affected by floods.
Mr. Chandra said people living in low-level areas could move to these schools in case there was a necessity.
All arrangements to provide food and water in these schools have been made.
He also said that as per the current situation, there was no necessity to evacuate people from low-level areas.
Cuddalore
Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam has said that all fair price shops in Cuddalore district will remain open on Sunday to make available essential commodities to the rain-affected people.
After inspecting flood-affected areas at Killai and Parangipettai near here on Saturday, he told presspersons that food was being supplied in adequate quantity to the families.
At Killai, the Minister himself distributed food packets to residents.
Later, he made a surprise visit to the Killai fishermen cooperative fair price shop to check a complaint that a salesperson was faulting on supply of essentials to card-holders.
After verifying records, Mr. Panneerselvam found lapses on the part of the salesperson and placed him under suspension.
The Minister also visited Delhi Dargah Sahib Street, Kottai Sankara Street, Ponnanthittu, Chinna Vaikkal, Manampadi, M. G. R.Nagar, Maruvangarai and Nanjaimuthu Vazhkkai and assured people that steps had been taken to tackle rain-related problems.
Collector P. Seetharaman, District Revenue Officer S. Natarajan, Killai town panchayat Chairman Ravichandran, Parangipettai town panchayat Chairman Mohammad Yunis and Public Relations Officer Pon. Muthiah accompanied the Minister.
