Two Army personnel were killed and one went missing on Monday night when an avalanche hit the border post of the Kumaon Scouts near the Indo-Nepal border at Pithoragarh district’s Chiyalekh region.

Four Army personnel were injured in the avalanche which occurred at a distance of 130 km from the Pithoragarh district headquarters.

“Army sources have informed us that two bodies have been recovered so far and efforts to recover the missing body are underway,” Pithoragarh District Magistrate Sushil Kumar said.

The injured are stranded in Chiyalekh amid inaccessible conditions due to snow. “Two helicopters were sent to rescue the injured, but the helicopters couldn’t land due to snow.

Twenty-two Army personnel have taken the trek route to Chiyalekh to rescue the injured,” Mr Kumar said.
