: Tripura government has decided to install close circuit (CC) camera in all police stations of the State. Nine out of 71 police stations have already been brought under CC camera surveillance, and installation in remaining stations would be done in phases.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar who is holding theHome portfolio made this announcement in the State Assembly while responding to security related questions. “The State government has a plan to install CC cameras in every police station”, he stated.

A senior police official said installation of camera surveillance in police stations is in compliance with recommendation of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). “Nevertheless the State government had a plan on CC Camera to make the work of the police force more transparent and contain alleged abuses”, he told The Hindu on Tuesday.

Nine of the total 71 police stations have already came under CC camera watch and the rest would be covered in phases, the Chief Minister added. The police stations where cameras are installed include Bishalgarh police station near Agartala where an incident of custodial death occurred in 2010.

The incident had triggered massive repercussions with groups like Tripura Human Rights Organisation (THRO) demanding camera surveillance in lock-up of police stations as well as prisons. The State government has also decided to open more all women police stations.
